Mastodon/Pleroma looks to be for broadcast, what would be the best options for sharing content with friends/groups - I’m assuming without knowing better Diaspora or Frendica?

CalcKey (a misskey fork) has local only posting, channels, groups, chat (and group chat) and a “Drive” feature that lets you store and share files

I haven’t used Diaspora or Friendica though, so I have no point of comparison

Once I tried it, I couldn’t go back. It’s main issue is that it has very little 3rd party app support. MilkTea (designed for Misskey) is it really, and it’s imperfect.

@_ed@sopuli.xyz If diaspora, they still don’t have ActivityPub support.

Friendica and Hubzilla, they have group features, but if I remember correctly, if it’s set to private it doesn’t work well with ActivityPub accounts (there are more permissions in Friendica and Hubzilla than is supported by ActivityPub platforms).

Then there is the #Guppe service (https://a.gup.pe). But I’m not sure how well it works if a post was set in private (I’m assuming the post will be boosted publicly).

The qoto.org version of the Glitchsoc fork have “Circles” feature, similar to Google Plus and diaspora, if you share to those circles, only them can see it (Friendica and Hubzilla have a similar features too).

I think MissKey and forks also have a “circle” type feature but I haven’t thoroughly tested it.

Also check out Bonfire who’ll also support Circles. Their social microblogging parts is only a foundation of many different functionalities to be built on top.

According to my search Friendica is the best one for family/groups according to the interactions features compared to the other ones. But the downside/irony is that it can be less user friendly than the others ones IMO. Check for yourself to help you decide. Diaspora is a close second place.

I’d suggest making a Matrix space to use with friends. I find that works really great for small groups of people.

or simplex chat is great to

If you want to self-host or have it hosted for you then have a look at Hometown https://github.com/hometown-fork/hometown/wiki which allows Local only posts. The developer Darius has written articles before shared in an interview on how he is running a friends only Hometown instance.

GoToSocial also supports local-only posting. And it is much, much lighter-weight to run than a full-blown Mastodon instance.

Maybe https://epicyon.net/ if you don’t mind some self-hosting.

Awesome - thanks for all the feedback. Looks like I have a bit of testing ahead of me.
