Has anyone thought of resurrecting the concept of URNs for Lemmy/Federated content? I just ask as it seems as one way to start thinking about reducing the link rot caused when something like imgur or gfycat goes private or offline. As it stands…a ton of lemmy instances brought up in the last few weeks will be gone in a month.

Something like an URN would be useful if there was some concept of ‘super-federation’, where two or more instances of the same service chose to cross-store data

Browsers don’t support URNs currently, and the lookup/registry system would be potentially vast and full of duplicates, but it seems worth thinking about.
