Some context: I was /u/Blackstar9000 on Reddit. You might know me from /r/TheoryOfReddit. Or maybe not—I ditched my account there a number of years ago. I’ve been on the Fediverse for about 6 years, primarily via Mastodon. Last October, I deactivated my Twitter account. I’ve been through a bunch of social media sites, and I’ve seen the patterns. This post is about those patterns.

A lot of you are trying out Lemmy or Kbin because of what’s been happening at Reddit. (Welcome to the Fediverse!) And a lot of you will be going back to Reddit as soon as things quiet down. You might not think you’re one of those people, or you might not be sure where you stand. I’m not here to tell you what to do, just to prepare you to decide. That’s the goal: a decision. As opposed to letting inertia decide for you.

There are a few factors at play here. One is that you’re accustomed to Reddit. You may not like what’s been going on there lately, but the platform is familiar, you know how it works, it feels like a broken-in pair of sneakers. Every bit of friction you feel here is going to nudge you back in that direction.

Another is that the Fediverse is different. Lemmy and Kbin are designed to do something very like what Reddit, Digg and other link-aggregating social sites do, but the fact of federating with the broader network makes certain complications impossible to avoid or ignore. And there are deliberate differences that have less to do with federation than with what the devs thing might work better. Some people adapt quickly, others don’t. Some people just plain don’t like it. In any case, there’s a learning curve, and that’s bound to be a source of friction.

A third is that Lemmy and Kbin are still finding their footing. These are independent, open source services, and they’re in the process of becoming the things they’ll one day be. Mastodon went through similar growing pains, and a lot of people bounced off of them during those awkward years when the UI was rough and the feature set incomplete. People’s ideas about Mastodon changed more slowly than the service itself, and it wasn’t until things got really bad on Twitter that adoption rates kicked back up again. Mastodon still isn’t what Twitter became, and probably never will be, but it’s a much more professional-feeling piece of tech than it used to be. Someone is building the airplane we’re flying on. Any Fediverse service that survives long enough will go through that process, and if you’re not clear-eyed about the need for patience, that too can push you away.

A fourth factor is social. If you’ve been on Reddit for a while, then you probably have a decent mental map of your relationships on that platform. You’ll probably reconnect here with some people you know from there, and maybe even carve out spaces where you can reconstruct some of the communities you were a part of there. But you can’t transplant your entire social map. To stay here—to even want to stay here—you’ll need to build a new web of relationships, one that might include some portions of the old web, and that’s more friction.

All of that friction adds up, and the only antidote, really, is resolve.

So you’ll hang out here during the blackout, when there’s friction on both sides of the line. A small minority of you will take to the Fediverse immediately and move most of your activity off of Reddit. But only a small minority. Some of you will get a taste for it and split your time between here and Reddit. For most of you, though, the gravity of your history with Reddit will win out in relatively short order.

No hard feelings. We’re happy to have the people who stay. But if you go back, let that be something you’ve decided to do, not just muscle memory taking over. Because that’s another thing I’ve seen happen time and time again: People try out the Fediverse, only to drift back to the corporate platform. Then six months later, a year, two years, something new comes up. The platform finds a new way to alienate users, and some subset of them will go hunting through their email to figure out which Fediverse server their forgotten account is on, and what login name they used. (Trust me: keep that info somewhere you can find it.)

Going back is a valid decision! I just want you to decide, rather than let muscle memory decide for you. And if you go back, set a limit for yourself. Figure out the straw that would break the camel’s back. Tell yourself, “If they ever do this, I’ll delete my account,” so that if they ever do that, you actually will.

I’ve already made my plans to settle in the Fediverse/Lemmy. Yes, it’s Reddit with extra steps, but the smaller communities, more tailored instances, and to be a part of something in its infancy compared to where Reddit is now, is really appealing to me.

Plus, this won’t be the last time time Reddit screws with it’s users. There will be more influxes of users in the future to look forward to.

I’m loving the infancy as well. Finally get to be a part of something from early on (ish) lol. Patience is my intention here. I have very low standards and just scroll most of the time. Any friends I made on Reddit, I have subsequently connected with through other apps so none of that is lost. I’ll keep my Reddit account as a monument to all the posts I made and karma I got. Occasionally I’ll go read through the communities I joined that I miss, but that’s it, occasionally. That’s about how often I truly engaged anyway. Anything I actually needed from them is available elsewhere, like YouTube, or by going out and meeting people.

Good insights.

For someone whose reddit usage was 99.99% through Sync though, I am anticipating A LOT of basic friction of trying stay on Reddit while only using the mobile site. I refuse to download the app, especially in it’s current form.

Sync might come to Lemmy, the dev has mentioned it being a possibility on the redditsync subreddit

Yeah I saw that. Would be cool if it happens.

yea, i’m in the same boat. i just don’t even see a path back to comfort on reddit, lemmy is a lot different but I’d much rather push through this pain than go back to reddit. i’ve already posted more here in the last couple days than probably my last year on reddit.

If you are on Android, I’ve been able to make Jerboa very similar to Sync’s “list” style, you might want to check it out if you haven’t yet.

Just joined lemmy today and am using the Jerboa app. It took me a bit to get logged in, the “instances” confused me. But I was able to customize my feed to look like what it used to on RiF(been using close to 10 years).

I second Jerboa for android users who were comfortable on RiF

Completely agree! My decision was made once Apollo announced its last day will be June 30th. After that point I’ll be sticking with alternatives like Lemmy and Kbin on mobile. I’ve been looking for a Reddit alternative for a while now. This last string of events was the final push I needed to actually make the jump.

RedditIsFun closing down was the straw that broke the camels back. I keep tapping where it used to be in my most commonly used apps and opening WhatsApp instead… then I remember and scroll down to Jerboa instead. I think there’ll always be a reddit shaped hole in my heart, having been a redditor for about 14 years (changing accounts messed up my time keeping), but something may grow to fill the space yet.

We shall see. Whether its Lemmy, Mastodon, Calckey? I don’t yet know. Possibly I will need to start my own instance to feel at home, but I’m looking forward to that journey.

If the fallout from Twitter’s API decision is anything to go by, some of the developers who used to maintain apps for Reddit will likely pivot to making Fediverse apps instead. That’s what Tapbots after API changes pushed them off of Twitter. It wouldn’t surprise me if Apollo were to relaunch as a Lemmy/Kbin app three months from now.

I really wish Christian from Apollo would make it compatible with Lenny too. It wouldn’t make much financial sense I know but it would be a nice final blow to Reddit

We can only hope! I’ve purchased lifetime Ultra for Apollo and would happily pay again if moved to Lemmy. Though I’m currently using the Mlem TestFlight and it’s been pretty good so far!

Good article and great insights.

I am a RIF refugee myself and only heard a bit about mastodon because I never took interest in twitter.

After the Reddit drama I heard about instances like these and federations themselves and it peaked my interest.

I tried a few options but I enjoy Kbin the most.

I am honestly done with the centralization of the information I consume and the enshittification of it. I’d rather take the leap of information possibly disappearing than to have it behind ridiculous paywalls and endless sponsored content.

Almost everything is being build in a shitty facebook/tik tok/insta clone based on monetization and it irritates me more and more.

I am just looking for a forum like experience with the information simple and dense on my screen (like RIF).

The fact that I can get that here is enough for me to stay.

Another thing is for the people who read this and my contemplate to return. Reddit will bend you over again…and again…and again.

They need to see profits and they are willing to go scorched earth for it.

I’m in the camp of not wanting to go back, but I sure do love watching a train wreck.

It’s not that Lemmy or Kbin are bad alternatives (I think they’re pretty good tbh), but I would really like to stay on Reddit because that’s where the content is. That’s where the vast majority of people are going to stay and so that’s where the interesting posts will stay.

Me continuing to use Reddit is entirely contingent upon Reddit Inc. making mobile apps usable again, either by lowering API costs so 3rd party apps can continue to exist, or improving the official app by a LARGE margin to bring it in line with the apps they’re killing. If they don’t do that, I’m more than happy to stay on Lemmy.

Welcome to the fediverse!

Reddit won’t. You hold out hope that Reddit will improve your experience. But you are not the customer though, so why would you expect them to?

Reddit’s valuation has grown tremendously over the years. From a few million, to 15 billion. It is now beholden to many stakeholders (and soon many more with the IPO) expecting a return on investment. Reddit is a factory farm, and you are a chicken in a shitty cage happy to lay eggs for no pay.

If you are okay with that, then by all means. 👍

But I’ve come to realize that free run chicken eggs taste a hole lot better, even if there are fewer of them.

Sadly, there’s the third option: abandon both. Speaking from experience, I went through this some time ago with another social network and couldn’t be bothered with factors 1 and 2, but then the 3rd factor came in, also I didn’t like what the new place was becoming. But the old one has already changed to corporate greed and it feels different. So now both places feel alien to me, so I chose neither. I’m not saying it will be the same for Lemmy, just ranting :D

Thanks for the insightful post. I suppose I’ll share my position in case anyone else stumbling across it is in a similar boat.

Personally, I would like to stay on reddit. I like many of the communities I found on there; the shear volume of users enabled more niche interests to find sizable groups. Of course, this is also what wrought many of reddit’s problems, but I always seemed to be able to separate them from me. I found my way through the toxic users, but there’s only so much you can do about toxic management.

Lemmy is ambitious and its existence is admirable, but I don’t think it can capture what reddit had. I want to go back to reddit, but not to the reddit that is antagonizing its users like it is now.

I’m hoping that most third party apps will adapt to lemmy, providing a friction in our favor.

Being a day one Apollo user the friction of using the official app or mobile browser version of Reddit is high enough to make it basically impossible unless I WANTED to force myself, and I don’t. July 1st Mlem will go where Apollo currently sits in my app drawer. As it is I really only go on Reddit to watch the place burning. I have nearly 200 comments here on lemmy in just a few days, it’s replacing Reddit just fine so far. Yes we’re missing a lot of niches but we’ll get there.

@bdonvr
I really hope #apollo goes the way of twitter apps and sees the sea change then makes it compatible with #Lemmy and #kbin
@lrhodes @fediverse

That would be nice, though it doesn’t sound like @christianselig@mastodon.social is very interested as far as I can tell.

What a great write up! I think your description of what will happen is spot on.

Thanks for the insights ! I currently want to stay on Lemmy as it’s way easier for me to interact with the communities here for now.

I’ve got a question for you, wise man. What made you make the move to the Fediverse six years ago ? :o

Good question. My memory is pretty fuzzy, but I think I first heard about Mastodon from @neauoire@merveilles.town, who I followed on Twitter after stumbling across their Beldam label on Bandcamp. I don’t remember if I was already frustrated with the direction Twitter was taking, or just curious about the new technology, but I set up an account on mastodon.xyz, quickly graduated to running my own server, then decided that was more commitment than I was willing to put in, and relocated to Merveilles.town.

Great post. Can I quote a bit of it and add a link in my post on what Kbin, Lemmy, and the fediverse can learn from the experiences with Mastodon? https://privacy.thenexus.today/kbin-lemmy-fediverse-learnings-from-mastodon/

Great post. I purged my content and deleted my accounts on reddit, I’m here for the long-haul.

This is a quality post. I enjoy the attention and repetition of making sure that each user internalizes their autonomy of needing to make a deliberate choice and calling out that force of habit is a difficult thing to break. I needed to move Apollo clear from its location on my phone and replace it with the Lemmy PWA to ensure I would stop going back to reddit even if accidentally.

Whether it’s on Lemmy, or Kbin, or any other fediverse app I hope that users take a look at their values for their presence on the web and begin taking steps to take back their choice of what that looks like. A lot of us still have facebook or use some other app because it’s is basically the only way to keep interacting with their close friends and family. I wouldn’t begrudge anyone for that, I do it too. But we can do our best to chose for ourselves where to spend the bulk of our own time.
