The only places there that haven’t changed are the tiny game subs, to my limited willingness to use the site. I have checked the niche subs I used to moderate, and all but one is swamped with bullshit. Even that one has changed some. The only ones of those unchanged are the ones I had set to private ages before spez threw his little hissy-fit. The ones that were public are either dead, botted, or just unchecked insanity with bad moderation. Spam everywhere.

That’s kind of not the poster’s fault.

When a given interface respects the cross posting method, it doesn’t show multiple posts, it shows one post with a list of places it was cross posted to.

Unfortunately, not every interface respects that part if federation. Most lemmy apps don’t (afaik, none do, but I can’t claim to use all of). If kbin via web isn’t following that, it isn’t that person’s fault.

Now, that’s different from someone making multiple posts of the same thing because they don’t know how to cross post lol.

You’ve got a terminology problem.

Free speech has become a coded term.

It shouldn’t have, but it did. Now, when people say they want “free speech” they don’t usually mean that they want all speech protected. They mean that they want specific kinds of speech protected.

Those kinds fall afoul of the “tolerance paradox” because the people crowing the term around are specifically the neo nazis, gay bashers, extremists and kkk friendly sorts.

So, if you find a “free speech” instance, that is exactly who will dominate the instance. That’s just a fact now. Every instance that has laid claim to free speech gets taken over by those people.

As such, defederation is the only realistic option because those same people refuse to follow the rules on other instances. It has happened recently with hexbear. It had previously happened with exploding heads. And, frankly, it was always the case with lemmygrad, though they were usually not as bad about ignoring rules elsewhere.

The other type of thing you get on “free speech” places is kiddie porn. Sometimes just the drawn kind, but sometimes the real stuff.

Being real with you? You will not find an instance that allows hate speech that isn’t dominated by it. Period. It doesn’t exist. If you specifically enjoy that kind of thing, that’s on you. But that isn’t the same thing as people having a different opinion. That’s people wanting other human beings to be anything from oppressed to eradicated. If that’s something you think is just a matter of opinion, you might as well head on over to exploding heads because you aren’t going to last long anywhere else. You’ll get banned from most places by virtue of trying to defend hate speech.

I dig that for sure!

Afaik, they don’t mind at all. I know there’s a ton of American users there as it is, so if they mind, they’re not minding out loud lol

Well, that’s because it’s in Canada. Nothing relevant ever comes from there except Celine Dion and maple syrup.

Legit though, are you under the assumption that the instance only allows Canadian related communities? There’s all kinds of C/s on there that aren’t about Canada. And that doesn’t matter with lemmy (much) in the first place. It only matters if you exclusively want to use the local feed. Your subscriptions feed doesn’t have to be from that instance, and the all feed gives you access to anything anyone there has access to. As soon as you search for a community, the whole instance gets access to it via federation. I figure you’re joking, but just in case you weren’t, what instance you’re from doesn’t limit your feeds to a significant degree (usually).

It’s almost like you can sign up without being from Canada

I dunno. I think trying to treat peertube the same as lemmy is going to be impossible. Video hosting and sharing is a massive data hog. It’s going to take a dedicated non-profit organization to make it viable. Without a backbone like mastodon has, I don’t see it ever being anything useful.

Reread their last sentence.

What instance you use as your home instance is irrelevant unless it has been defederated from an unusual amount of instances. You likely don’t want to try and use lemmygrad as your home lol.

Otherwise, home instance is only going to determine your local feed. Which is pretty much the least used feed anywhere other than maybe beehaw. Discovery via all combined with searches lets you populate your subscribed feed, so those are the ones that you’ll use most.

Lemmy is federated by design. If you try and treat instances like some kind of dedicated site the way reddit was, you might as well not use it at all because you’ll be missing out on the benefits federation brings to the format.

Are you old enough to remember geocities? It had these circles where individual sites within geocities would link to each other. You would have your own site, but be linked to maybe hundreds of others. That’s closer to what lemmy is than the kind of reddit experience you’re probably used to.

Fwiw, sh.itjust.works is a horrible name, but a great instance lol.

What’s funny though, I’m getting beehaw posts in my all feed since yesterday. No idea if they’ve refederated with us, or if it’s an artifact of connect (my app of choice), or what,

Eh, mastodon has better apps available though. So user experience in that regard differs.

It matters even less with mastodon than lemmy, and it really doesn’t matter much here at all
