Huh, I never heard of ghost.org before. That’s a pretty cool project

What? Even if they wanted to, the devs can’t control who uses Lemmy. It’s FOSS

I’m grateful for all Lemmings, but at this particular moment, mostly you.

Even as we recognize that Lemmy is a collective effort where every user can play a part, there are some roles which are more important than others. You’ve been an excellent admin for your own users, but also a unifying force for the network as a whole, neutralizing and bridging the spaces between many other Lemmy servers.

This post is the clearest example of that to date, but your contributions have always exhibited a good sense of diplomatic tact along with strong internal values and principles.

Kudos to you @sunaurus@lemm.ee.

I think there is a bit of hysteria about Threads/Meta and some people are trying to push back. There are plenty of people in this thread that don’t fully understand federation and are knee-jerk reacting because it’s Meta.

However, I totally agree with the sentiment being expressed, which is to keep Meta and large corporations as far away from Lemmy as possible. This is a community-run space that is a haven from the corporate internet, and indeed capitalist society in general. Protecting this space should be our highest priority.

I feel that some of our more technical users are losing the forest for the trees in this discussion. Believe it or not, some Lemmings don’t come from a 30 year tech background and don’t fully understand how the platform, or indeed the internet as a whole, actually functions.

This group of people, which includes me, are acting rationally by opposing any interaction with Meta on grounds of principle. We don’t know exactly what we are scared of, but we do know if there is any vulnerability or weakness that Meta is trying to exploit, they already know their plan and we won’t know until it’s too late. Meta is a terrifying behemoth just waiting for a chance to consume Lemmy. I would argue that a little bit of hysteria is justified in this case.

Edit: just to clarify, this is more of a response to the parent comment, I think we are in agreement. I didn’t want to start another reply thread so I figured I would build off your point.

It appears that @admin@lemmyrs.org has been busy at his job recently and hasn’t had much spare time. He also ran into some issues upgrading to 0.18.1.

I don’t this it’s necessary to desticky this just yet, as it is of paramount importance to get smaller instances up and running at this stage. These comments and the posts on the server itself explain the situation well enough. If he’s still on 0.17.4 in a few weeks then I would probably agree with you, and I appreciate you bringing it to people’s attention.

Being able to articulate a complex thought and have someone else really respond to what I am saying is an absolute gamechanger for Lemmy right now.

On reddit, I was so sick of typing out a long, well-reasoned argument, only for the other user to ignore everything I said and respond with trolling, sarcastic answers. Here, people actually have some level of self-respect, and they usually engage in good faith.

Tbh, I didn’t read all of it, I started skimming at some point.

I think we all need to consciously deprogram our brains from the reddit mindset. We are no longer anonymous specks in a massive crowd, shouting at the top of our lungs for attention and recognition. We are now part of a small community of talented and intelligent individuals and it behooves us to conduct ourselves as such.

But you’re both good, this was honestly much more civil than what things used to devolve into on reddit. I don’t even mind some highbrow intellectual banter from time to time 😅

See my response here.

Wasn’t sure how to tag you.

Whilst I appreciate the pair of you demonstrating an intellectual vivacity and facility for debate that is rarely found on reddit, perhaps I might share a bit of my own wisdom, gleaned from decades spent in online communities.

Namely, know when to hold 'em and when to fold 'em; there is no shame in agreeing to disagree. Especially when the subject of disagreement is something so minor.

It may not be possible to formulate a scientifically complete theory of the psychological effects of making edits and downvotes to Lemmy comments and posts. And thus, it seems possible for two smart people to have different perspectives on the issue.

There are situations where someone is clearly incorrect and spending paragraph after paragraph to demonstrate that is warranted, or at least justifiable. But I don’t think this particular conversation really needed to be like that.

The thing about being rational and smart is that you constantly have to balance applying those traits to the external world and applying them to your own behavior. In this case, you two were so caught up in the particulars of the topic at hand that you were forgetting the context of the conversation, and thus leaving your rationality in question from a different angle. If either of you had been able to recognize this angle without my help, you could have effectively “won” the argument by merely accepting that it was possible to disagree on this topic without admitting to being wrong.

For others looking for info about fixing the problem, @Saigonauticon@voltage.vn was also able to delete tens of thousands bots from his server. He gave a more succinct explanation, but it may be helpful to others with this problem.

I’ve wiped the bots out of my instance. In case you meet someone else with the same issue, here’s what I did:

  1. Log in to my server over ssh
  2. run ‘docker -ps’ to get the name of the container running postgresql
  3. docker exec -it <container name> /bin/bash
  4. psql -h localhost -p 5432 -U lemmy -d lemmy
  5. The bot users in my case were all users where id>=3 in my case.
  6. So I ran DELETE FROM TABLE local_user where id>=3
  7. Done

Of course this is not practical for large instances with a lot of actual users. They might need a user ID range or list to delete. Maybe I ought to write a script to automate this or something.

That’s correct, any thread starting with a Meta comment will disappear from your perspective.

On the other hand, assuming Meta hasn’t defederated mander.xyz, Meta users could still see and comment on posts that you made on misguided.ml. You wouldn’t see any of their comments, but users of misguided.ml would be able to.
