My hot take is people on mastodon are there because they want defederated twitter and aren’t as nerdy about trying new online social experiences

I am desperate for location-based internet. My local government can’t be bothered to supply any information online beyond what they are required to. Craigslist and facebook marketplace provide at least commerce, sorta. And of course universities nowadays have official discord servers. See how our need to localize has ended up supporting the most evil corporations rather than self-hosting? I was very interested in Youtube Location-based videos, but it’s a mystery how it works and hidden behind The Algorithm, rather than a local videos page.

Oh, so Shopify + Stripe but decentralized. It sounds… It might have some security issues, and of course banks might offer some resistance.

I can see this going well. But I can also see them creating issues by consensus, such as “defederation blocklists” and “user blacklists”, they also have our names, emails, and IP addresses right? Instance admins have quite real power already. Perhaps users also ought to have such democratic discussions?

Our instance fucking rules and offers the most interesting and diverse communities on Lemmy. Thank you for your efforts.

I can’t believe I keep seeing this slander of Blahaj. We federated with those tankie communities as an olive branch. And they defederated with us after it became clear we didn’t like them. We aren’t a bunch of safe space tenderqueers, we tried to make a difficult relationship work.

And Beehaw defederated because they needed more moderators / more moderation tools.

You’ve also put censorship in the bottom left of the political compass…

I can see this going the way of Minecraft servers. Little banner ads that explain a community’s perks. Heh. This is a concern to me too, and the effort involved is what’s keeping me from joining and posting on other Fediverse apps immediately, and I’m putting it off.

There are a lot of fediverse projects that could really really use some marketing to explain what they’re doing and who they are for. And for developers, hey, I hate corporations but I’m generous. I would absolutely subscribe for features or perks or whatever.

  1. I need an extensive guide on how to find the right Fediverse spaces for the social experience I’m trying to get. Ie. App marketing, instance marketing

  2. The Fediverse needs to offer, on the surface non-technical, things that corporate social medias don’t currently offer.

Ie. Killer app features

Thank you, Ive seen this repeatedly and now Ive been better informed.
