Could we use this sorting algorithm on Lemmy?
cross-posted from: https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/11252604 > I found this link aggregator that someone made for a personal project and they had an exciting idea for a sorting algorithm whose basic principle is the following: > > 1. Upvotes show you more links from other people who have upvoted that content > 2. Downvotes show you fewer links from other people who have upvoted that content > > I thought the idea was interesting and wondered if something similar could be implemented in the fediverse. > > They currently don't have plans of open-sourcing their work which is fine but I think it shouldn't be too hard to try and replicate something similar here right? > > They have the option to try this out in guest mode where you don't have to sign in, but it seems to be giving me relevant content after upvoting only 3 times. > > There is more information on their website if you guys are interested. > > Edit: Changed title to something more informative

You know what I agree with you. I should work on my tone more and try to contribute at the same time. Thanks for the feedback.

I like being direct. I don’t have all the answers (no one does) but I think asking people to think about solutions when they offer criticism helps move the conversation forward.

Yeah, maybe there could be a website that helps people find these alternative sites so they don’t need to rely on Amazon as much.

Personally, I am more for voluntary association than increasing government power but I agree that important systems should be under public control.

Okay, so your potential solution is to build a robust and effective reputation/reporting system. I like the idea. There are a few different projects that have to deal with the same problems so maybe we can learn from them. As for logistics I am trying to think about if there is a way to make that system better in a decentralized system.

Ok, you don’t think that decentralizing is the solution. If you consider Amazon and eBay to be a problem what do you think might be a potential solution?

I still don’t think this solves the problem that you posed on emotions but thank you for at least proposing a solution instead of just pointing out a problem.

Since I don’t see what you have suggested as a problem I don’t think I have much more to add.

Are you advocating that we move back to Reddit? I am not going to do that.

And if you aren’t advocating we move back to Reddit how do you want to solve this perceived problem?

(I am saying perceived because I don’t see it as a problem because with the fediverse you have a choice about where you can be and what rules you have to follow, unlike Reddit. Meaning that there are still consequences if the users decide to leave.)

I just wanted to thank you for giving actionable advice to them and having a pleasant tone.

No centralisation means there’s no canonical single source of truth.

I don’t think this is a bad thing. Having centralization leads to one narrative taking over the post. With more decentralization, there is a natural way for different kinds of conversation to take root.

Also, this is going to occur much more when people get the ability to block instances anyway.

I agree with you. What do you think we as users could do to make this happen?

Also on a sidenote has anyone thought of creating a publicly owned instance before? I wonder how that would work.

Yeah, I was thinking of scraping the active users as well but from what I observed when trying different instances, the active users aren’t counted separately by instance so the active users would just be all the active users on that community no matter where they are from. That info is already available on lemmyverse.net so I didn’t want to copy it.

I bet there is a way to do this with the Lemmy API but I don’t have a good understanding on how to use it so I am just waiting for someone more knowledgeable than me to try this again but with more care.

Edit: Unrelated but I went through the subreddit stats for a bunch of subs and it seems like posts and comments for a lot of them have dropped off after the API changes so that seems bad for Reddit and good for us.

Thank you! The !technology@beehaw.org chart is surprising. I think what you suggested is the most likely reason why that’s happening. Also maybe later I’ll put up the code that I used to scrape the data so you guys can double-check if there were any bugs.

Lemmy Fediverse subscription data
I was recently inspired by [this post](https://lemmy.world/post/3213845) made by [@mookulator@mander.xyz](https://mander.xyz/u/mookulator) to get the subscription statistics for a list of Lemmy instances. I did this by scraping the data from the Communities tab from every Lemmy instance listed on the [awesome-lemmy-instances](https://github.com/maltfield/awesome-lemmy-instances) from GitHub. So all of this data is available publicly. I separated it as follows: Local instance: The instance that the data is being scraped from Community: The name of the community Community instance: The instance that the community is hosted on Local Subscription count: The subscription count of that community coming from the local instance If the Local instance is equal to the Community instance the Subscription count is actually the total number of users subscribed to that community across the Threadiverse. Since I was web scraping these websites the data is a bit rough because I had to convert stuff like 42K into 42000 so it isn't going to be 100% accurate. Also, this scrape doesn't include instances that weren't on the list when I pulled the CSV and alternatives to Lemmy like Kbin or Mastodon users subscribing to Lemmy communities. This was gathered over the course of a day starting from 12:00 PM EST to about 7:00 PM EST today. The data could be better if I used the API or added the information from lemmyverse.net on the total subscriber counts but I spent a lot of time on this as is and don't know how to use the API. I hope someone uses this to make a data visualization of subscription patterns for Lemmy because I would really like to see that. P.S. On the post that inspired this post, there was some discussion about whether Lemmy users would like this to be done. So if you guys don't like it I will delete the data.

Informal Lemmy U.N.?
cross-posted from: https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/2491711 > I was wondering if there was a community where admins of different instances got together and chat in general about decisions for how they run their instances. > > Sort of like an informal U.N. for Lemmy admins.
