The weak argument they make is this doesn’t look good at small sizes. Personally I don’t think that constitutes a good enough reason to rebrand the fediverse

Yeah I’ve been trying to find good alternatives to github for “where open source should happen” because at it stands a ton of it happens on a single node owned by a single entity. My first instinct was gitlab since its big and open source, but you can’t really do discovery with it like you can github, and you need to be logged in to do discovery at all. I landed on Codeberg as being the best for an open source future, and them with Forgejo, Gitea, and Gitlab are all implementing ActivityPub now. This is great news. Mastodon users could hypothetically create and comment on issues without creating forge accounts. People with self hosted forges can do some work and open pull requests. Major win, I think

Not really. How many users are on the blocked instances? How many of those instances have tried to federate with Beehaw? How active are the people on the blocked instances? How active are people not on those instances who do interact with them? A raw number of instances isn’t that useful to understanding the impact on the network graph

Left and Right are far too ill defined in a complicated political system to say authoritarianism is inherently incompatible with leftism. The very first left / right split was between two different groups of authoritarians with one side wanting to a government similar to the prior monarchy they had enjoyed, and the other side establishing a brutal dictatorship that killed 40,000 people for not hating the concept of monarchy enough. We need a more complicated metaphor than Left / Right because otherwise we get stuck in “no true Scotsman” debates about the many different spectrums of opinion someone can have. I agree the political compass sucks, I don’t agree its a tool to coopt leftness by right wingers. I think, as I said, what we need is to start normalizing more complicated spectrum tools like 8values and 9axes

I like the idea of filters and sorting. Also I liked the old layout better where there was a vertical split with federated instances on the left and defederated instances on the right

It’s also a problem with how much information Lemmy makes available. In most of the fediverse the block list includes a reason field

There’s also just a lot of “if it gets repeated enough it enters the collective consciousness as truth” where regardless if someone just casually observing sees the same thing over and over and just assumes the popular take must be the truth. The willfully ignorant poison the narrative for the casual observer, and now there’s a set narrative divorced from what the original reasoning was

I view it as a useful over simplification. We can simplify politics all the way down to “Left/Right” but that ignores so much of what motivates and drives people. In our current political environment, an ecofascist and an anarchosyndicalist might both be labeled as “left” even though the only thing they have in common is thinking “Maybe we shouldn’t just destroy the planet?” so the political compass is an easy to print visual aid to help guide people to that political views exist along multiple spectrums. My personal view is that the current best “political quiz with information at the backend about who you fit with” is 9axes, and that’s mostly because we’ve gotten to a point where we’re ready to start labeling the political compass as “no longer a useful over simplification, and instead a gross oversimplification”

To be fair to the large number of blocked instances on the Beehaw blocklist, most of them are from a starter blocklist that’s been circulated through the fediverse of “These are skinhead and child sexual abuse material instances. Block them before they even try to federate.” I think the only true defederation controversy is with Lemmy.World and sh.itjust.works and that was a purely mechanical issue of “too much troll traffic all at once and no tools to surgically handle it rather than just burn down the whole thing”

I said it somewhere yesterday, but community building is more about moderation and organic growth than it is getting everyone on board all at once. The threadiverse is fantastic but its also running on a pair of software with substantial bugs and basic features missing

I mean slightly bad example since Microsoft migrated a bunch of their hotmail users to outlook addresses hahahaha. But yeah. I especially feel that way about people who want all !news communities to just be aggregated together when that doesn’t actually make sense when you think about it for more than a second. !news@beehaw.org and !news@ttrpg.net don’t actually have much in common, in terms of what they’re about. I know !news@ttrpg.net doesn’t actually exist, but it feasibly could exist as a community for discussing table top role playing game news, like if Dungeons and Dragons has a big new release of material or something

It’s already happening. I saw a sh.itjust.works user impersonating a lemmy.world admin and presenting opposite positions to what that lemmy.world admin believed. I use keyoxide to help provide confirmation that yes, @Cube6392@beehaw.org and @Quill7513@slrpnk.net are the same person, both of them are me, don’t panic.

Why are we assuming some random person knows that a lemmy.world admin went to the Meta meeting based on “just trust me bro” and then the lemmy.world admins must make a statement. lemmy.world has 15 thousand weekly active users. They can’t possibly be held to the standard of making a statement every single time one of them makes some unsubstantiated accusation, or people who have some minor annoyance with lemmy.world will spend their time filling the admins’ time with constant statements about all the accusations they’re receiving.

Let your classmates know that last pass has semi permanently damaged their trustworthiness by trying to hide a security breach, and then downplaying the severity of the breach, and that your University’s security recommendations are intrinsically suspect as a result

They have multiple admins. The expectation would be for one of the non compromised admins to make the announcement. It’s a trusted channels thing

I like KeePass. Bitwarden currently has an nginx exposure in the Dockerfile published in their git repo (may have been fixed since a couple of days ago). That said, I used Bitwarden for many years and switched out of an abundance of paranoia, and am definitively not recommending against it. Just basically use one of the following:

• Bitwarden
• KeePass
• 1password

And stay far the fuck away from LastPass
